The Third and Most Important Barrier to Study: The Misunderstood Word

Boy reading about cooking

The third and most important barrier to study is the misunderstood word.

Girl reading sign in a zoo

“Mis” means not or wrongly.

“Misunderstood” means not understood or wrongly understood.

A misunderstood word is a word which is not understood,

Boy with girl talking at the table

or a word which is wrongly understood.

She has a misunderstood word.

Boy reading book and thinking about a cave
He has a misunderstood word.

Two girls talking about a lion

She has a misunderstood word.

Mom calling her son to come to eat dinner
He has a misunderstood word.

A misunderstood word can be a big word – alphabet
or a small word – him.

Boy do not understand a word

Have you ever come to the end of a page and realized that you did not remember what you had read?

If you come to the end of a page and do not remember what you have read then there was a word on the page that you did not understand.

Boy feel blank

Going past a word that you do not understand can make you feel blank,

Boy feel tired
or tired,

Boy feel worried

or like you are not there.

Boy feel angry

You might also feel worried or upset.

Two guy outside, handling a fire

This does not happen only when you are reading.

This can happen when you hear a word you do not understand.

Girl reading about cooking and thinking about baseball

The only reason a person would stop studying or get confused or not be able to learn is because he or she has passed a word that was not understood.

Girl trying to cook

A misunderstood word can make you seem silly.

Upset girl sitting in the kitchen

It can stop you from doing the things you are studying about.

Girl talks with her mom

It can make you want to stop studying.

Mom helps her daughter to understand cookbook

The way to handle this barrier is to look earlier in what you were reading for a misunderstood word.

Mom helps her daughter to understand cookbook

Go back to before you got into trouble,

Girl do not understand a word in a cookbook

find the misunderstood word and look it up in a dictionary.

Happy girl reading cookbook and clearing words

A dictionary is a word book. A dictionary contains the meanings of words and other information about them. A dictionary can be used to find out what a word means, how to say a word, how to spell a word, how to use a word and many other things about words.

Happy boy studying math and looking word in dictionary

Symbols can be misunderstood in the same way that words can be misunderstood.

Boy doing math

A symbol is a mark or sign that means something.

Happy boy applying math which he learned

Symbols also need to be understood.

The misunderstood word is the most important of the barriers to study because it is the one that can stop you from learning anything at all.

Boy feeling blank

So if you are feeling blank,

Boy feeling tired

or tired,

Boy is not there

or not there, or worried and upset while you are studying,

Boy is upset while studying

it is always because of a misunderstood word or symbol.
